WE DROVE UP to Trent’s apartment building. Just like everywhere else, there were zombies hovering around.

“Shit,” he said, staring at them. “I should have kept my jacket. I’ll be a welcoming smell to them now.”

He was right, and without a weapon, he’d never make it inside. Artie wasn’t going to be of any help, not with his cane. It was up to me.

Sighing, I reached down and pulled the gun out of my holster. “I’ll cover you.”

Trent’s face brightened up. “Cool. Thank you.”

“Try and hurry,” Artie said, turning off the engine.

“Yeah, I know. You sure about this, Trent?” I asked again, staring at the building. It was an older complex, rundown and probably very cheap. A decent enough place for a couple young guys to be starting off, though.

“Yeah. Besides, no matter what happens in there, I don’t have anywhere else to go,” he replied, his hand already on the door handle.

“You don’t have any family around?” Artie asked, looking back at him.

“Not nearby. They live in Madison. Anyway, if it’s the vaccine that’s changing everyone into zombie, then it’s too late for them anyway,” he said in a grim voice. “They always get flu shots.”

“We don’t know for sure,” I said. “You should try calling them.”

“I will.” He looked at Annalise. “Goodbye.”

“Goodbye,” she said shyly.

Trent turned to Artie. “Thanks for the ride.”

“Good luck to you,” he said.

“You, too,” Trent replied.

Artie looked over at me. “You sure you’re going to be okay?”

“If I do this quickly, yeah.” The idea of stepping out of the van felt like going straight up in a broken-down rollercoaster. But I knew Trent needed help getting into his building and I was the most capable, anxiety or not.

“Ready?” Trent asked.

“Yeah. Let’s do this before I change my mind,” I mumbled.

“You don’t look so good,” he said, noticing the expression on my face.

“I’m fine. Let’s go on the count of three,” I replied. “One. Two. Three.”

We both quickly got out of the van and headed toward the front entryway. Noticing us, three zombies turned and began moving in our direction.

Breathe in. Breathe out.

Raising my gun, I aimed at the one closest, a bald man in a biker vest. With his muscular arms and big, meaty hands, he looked like he could rip a man in half. From the blood on his knuckles and mouth, he probably already had earlier.

“Shoot it!” Trent, who was standing behind me, hollered.

Staring at the giant looming toward me, I took a deep breath and steadied hand, reminding myself of the recoil. Then, I pulled the trigger.

Boom!

The bullet hit the zombie in the forehead and it fell backward, blood and brain-matter spraying everywhere. I fired the gun again, missing the next zombie, a rail-thin woman with long, stringy brown hair. Swearing, I pulled the trigger again, this time shooting her in the cheek. As she dropped onto the grass, I felt a stab of remorse. Yeah, they were zombies, but it still didn’t make shooting them any easier.

“Close one,” Trent said, unlocking the door.
